On the fourth floor of a residential building, formerly a 17th Century palazzo, this studio apartment sits on the quiet west side, overlooking ruelle and Place Halle aux Herbes.  Sufficiently high above the warren of narrow streets to enjoy abundant natural light, its particular location is amazing: as well as being right by Place Rossetti and Ste. Réparate cathedral, this apartment is relatively secluded and remarkably tranquil for such a popular area - the upper floors of facing buildings are set back from the street, with few overlooking windows to disrupt your privacy: a little oasis of calm and delight.
Our balcony offers the happy combination of afternoon sunshine and morning shade: you can enjoy the neighbourhood comings and goings below from its peaceful setting, looking down onto the terracotta tiled roofs and folk meandering through Place Halle aux Herbes while you sip a morning coffee, or enjoy the magical afternoon lull as you soak up some rays.  And if the thrill of the Old Town or the heat of the sun overwhelm, retreat behind the traditional niçoise wooden shutters to revel in the apartment's cool tiles underfoot and its serene interior with contemporary fittings & furnishings and art by Matisse and Cocteau.

You will be thrilled by all the food specialities so close by: fabulous farm-fresh produce from the Cours Saleya market, delicious cheeses from la Poulette & a wide range of wines at Caves Caprioglio on rue de la Préfecture, some great fresh pasta vendors (la clé aux pâtes a real favourite), and Oliviera for fine artisanal olive oils just up the street, these are just a few of the many.
Vieux Nice is a foodie's delight and Pont Vieux has the kitchen to match with a small but carefully considered batterie de cuisine: good knives, solid wood & flexible silicon chopping boards, stainless steel pans, several oven & tapas dishes, plus various nifty kitchen implements comprise the essentials.  There are even steel hooks to hang your herb bundles and charcuterie.  Quality table, flat and stemware plus
electric kettle and classic Bodum cafétière complement the contemporary décor, while the concealed dishwasher minimises chores to sustain the relaxed mood.

Lou trincot: a perfect location in the very heart of Vieux Nice, the area chosen by wealthy merchants in the 17th century to build their grand domiciles: close to the protection and prestige of Cathédrale de Sainte Réparate, patron saint of the city, and right by the loveliest square of all, Place Rossetti, with its grand façades, cafés and elegant fountain.
The piazza was created in 1825 by the levelling of  buildings in front of the Old Town cathedral's baroque edifice to open the city space to the fresh air currents descending from the Colline du Château. Enjoying the serenity of
Place Halle aux Herbes, the former fruit & vegetable market flanking the cathedral, (removed to the Cours Saleya in the late 19th century), our studio apartment is quiet yet only steps from all manner of al fresco dining and entertainment.

Although the precise history of our building is obscure, it features in a map18 of 1624.  This same map shows  traversing the Paillon river the former "Pont Vieux"24, first constructed in 1252 and known as Porte Ste. Antoine; the only bridge between old and new Nice until the Pont Neuf was built in 1824. The Pont Vieux met its final end with the covering over of the Paillon in 1921; its ancient stone gateway already taken in the 19th century to ornament the cascade waterfall at the top of the Chateau Hill.
At both ends of rue du Pont Vieux ogival stone arches dating from the Middle Ages reveal the noble antiquity of this corner of Vieux Nice.
The modern style and conveniences of the apartment, however, provide a blissful counterpoint to its historic surroundings.
