The apartment is in the heart of baroque Vieux Nice, two minutes' walk to the beach & Cours Saleya: public transport nearby
Blissfully removed from the traffic noise of other parts of town and with its southern border flanking the beach, this ancient pedestrianised district benefits from major public investment and services to protect its architectural heritage and preserve its unique Franco-Italian atmosphere and traditions.
close to beach - Castel Plage
from market to Mediterranean and back via cobbles & colonnades Les Ponchettes between the Cours Saleya and Quai des Etats-Unis sunny days on Beau Rivage beach
A complex heritage: Ancient Greece and Rome, Italian Piedmont and Liguria and the Mediterranean islands of Corsica, Sardinia and even Sicily have all contributed their characteristics to the unique Niçois identity.  Amid the vibrant walls and colourful shutters of 17th century palazzi and sugared-almond baroque church façades, vivid sights and intriguing details appear on and around every corner of the Vieille Ville.  If you care to look you'll find a cannon ball embedded in the wall from a long-ago siege and numerous tiny shrines set high above the narrow thoroughfares.  You will also overhear Nissard, the local dialect, being spoken by artisan shopkeepers and stallholders at the bustling Cours Saleya market, and read the bilingual neighborhood street signs - not in Italian, but Nissard.  The local cuisine is celebrated the world over - ratatouille, salade niçoise, pistou, petits farcis, socca, pan bagnat, pissaladière - authentic family-run restaurants niçois inhabit the Old Town warren, serving many and varied dishes of the pays niçois and offering a relaxed, hospitable welcome plus delicious fare.

Of special interest to fans of Rick Stein's most recent adventure, Mediterranean Escapes, Nice is a major port of entry for Corsica's wonderful produce.
Mountain charcuterie such as figatellu, coppa and lonzu, smoked over chestnut wood; delicious goats' cheeses and ewe's milk brocciu (similar to ricotta) and honey - all redolent of the heady maquis scent of wild herbs - Corsican wine also; the Vin de Pays de l'Ile de Beauté (very often the house wine sold by the pichet in Nice restaurants) and the 8 appellations contrôlées: all are available locally, at reasonable prices and almost nowhere else outside Corsica.
la Poulette, traiteur & purveyor of fine cheese, rue de la Prefecture ferry to Corsica & Sardinia leaving Nice harbour authenticity tag on figatellu Caves Caprioglio, huge selection of wines, rue de la Prefecture
